I wonder if the bigger question is whether China can keep this talent in the long run. Having more researchers is one thing, turning that talent into companies and useful products is another.
There's plenty of evidence of China's ability to translate research into practical engineering. Just go look at who's leading in stuff like robotics, solar, and EV tech right now.
